It’s been a few weeks since the Anthropy event down in Cornwall, but the conversations I had and the ideas I came across there have stayed with me. Since then, I’ve gone deeper—reading articles, listening to podcasts, and exploring the topic in my own way. And one question keeps circling in my mind:

Is AI still just a tool we use—or has it now become an intelligence that uses tools, like we do?

Sounds like the start of a sci-fi film, I know. But stay with me…

AI: Once Just a Tool

When Artificial Intelligence first entered our lives, it was seen as a clever tool. We built it. We trained it. We asked it to help us speed up boring tasks, crunch data, organise systems—basically, do what we told it to do.

AI was our sidekick. Our digital assistant. It followed instructions.

Think of it like a super-charged calculator or Google search engine with a fancy brain.

But Something’s Shifted…

In the past couple of years, we’ve moved into a new era of AI—what some call autonomous AI or AI agents. These systems don’t just follow commands anymore. They can now:

  • Make decisions on their own
  • Use other tools (like apps, browsers, code, or even robots)
  • Carry out tasks without needing constant human input

So now, instead of just being a tool… AI is starting to use tools.

“We are heading toward a world where AI systems can take actions on our behalf—and sometimes actions we didn’t anticipate.”
– Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI – blog.samaltman.com

Let that sit with you for a moment.

We thought we were building a digital hammer—and suddenly the hammer’s picked up a screwdriver and started building a shelf. No instructions needed.

Wild, right?

So What Does This Mean?

We might be standing at a turning point.

  • Is AI still something we control?
  • Or is it now becoming a kind of intelligence in its own right—something that can think, act, and solve problems like we do, just faster, and without needing coffee breaks?

This question is important. Especially for those of us in the AI space—or anyone curious about where technology is heading. Because if AI is starting to make its own decisions and use tools, it changes the entire dynamic.

Not just how we work with it—but how we design, regulate, and even trust it.

Why This Conversation Matters

  • For businesses: You need to understand how AI agents can transform workflows, operations, and customer experience.
  • For creatives and marketers: This isn’t just about automation—it’s about co-creation. AI might become your next creative partner.
  • For educators and parents: Our kids will grow up in a world where AI isn’t just a tool—it’s an intelligent digital presence. How do we prepare them for that?
  • For everyone: This is about ethics, humanity, and the future of intelligence on Earth.

Whether you’re tech-savvy or just AI curious, this shift from tool to tool-user—is one we all need to be aware of.

Final Thought

The more I sit with this, the more I realise: we haven’t just built a machine; we may have opened the door to a new kind of intelligence. One that reflects us, mirrors us, and maybe even evolves beyond us. Google Deepmind which is an artificial research laboratory, even talks openly about AI evolving to general intelligence. And like any new relationship, it’s going to take awareness, responsibility, and a good dose of soul-searching.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Do you think AI is still just a tool—or has it become something more?
